Tackling Substance Use Programme: Understanding Addiction

On Tuesday 8th October 2024 the fifth session in the community co-designed Tackling Substance Use Education Programme took place in The Market.

The session focused on increasing knowledge and improving understanding around substance use focusing on theories (biological, social and psychological), risk and protective factors. The session was co-facilitated by Professor Kathryn Higgins (QCAP Director) alongside a resident from the Market community.

Professor Higgins kicked off session five by providing insight into the complex nature of substance use and the theories that can help explain why individuals use substances.

Attendees, comprising Market residents, MDA staff, guest speakers and QCAP researchers, identified and chatted about the biological, psychological and social determinants of substance use in their groups. Lively discussions emerged, with many sharing interesting stories relating to how these theories can also help with the recovery process.

We were delighted to welcome two guest speakers to the session:  Michael McDowell, from Belfast Experts by Experience (BEBE), and Billy O’Toole. Both shared their powerful, first-hand experiences of addiction. Their journeys from addiction to recovery were both insightful and engaging. They communicated information around substance use supports and services for adults, young people and families impacted by substance use in Northern Ireland. They also emphasised the importance of educating young people about substance use and addressing the stigma attached to addiction.
