Tackling Substance Use: Focus on Impact and Side Effects

Session 3 in our community co-designed Tackling Substance Use Education Programme took place on the evening of Tuesday 4 June in the Market community.

The programme aims to increase knowledge and improve understanding around substance use focusing on signs and symptoms, side effects, impacts, supports and help-seeking, stigma, understanding addiction, harm reduction, and ‘what works’ in tackling substance use (SU).

Session 3 focussed on raising awareness around the side-effects, signs and symptoms, and impacts of SU. The session was kicked off by Rachel Stitt, community co-facilitator on the programme, who provided an overview of the session and introduced the panel of guest speakers for the evening.

Professor Anne Campbell (QUB) led this session providing information on side effects and characteristics of depressants, stimulants, and opioids.

Our guest panel, comprising Micheal Morgan (Drug Outreach Team, BHSCT), Dr Aisling Diamond (Consultant, Emergency Medicine, BHSCT) and Dr Ourania Charalampidou (Psychiatrist, BHSCT) highlighted the impacts of SU and the current landscape for services. The session saw the sharing of practical advice on recognising signs and symptoms; and responding in a crisis.

The session again saw ongoing, open and honest discussion around substance use and it’s impacts. At the end of the session, Professor Anne Campbell reflected on the knowledge sharing between the speakers and the community:

“These sessions have been a huge learning experience for myself and colleagues… For the community, by the community”
