Sixth successive Green Flag Award for Queen’s iconic landscape
On Wednesday 31 July, Queen's University Belfast achieved its sixth successive Green Flag Award for its Main Site at the NI Green Flag Awards 2024-25.
The University has received Green Flag and Green Heritage Site awards on five previous occasions, recognising it as having one of the UK’s top green spaces.
Operated by Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, and running internationally in 18 countries, the Green Flag Awards set the benchmark national standard for and recognise excellence in the management of our public spaces. Winners are judged on the overall quality of green space and the work that goes into keeping grounds in pristine condition.
This year's NI Green Flag Awards were held in Lagan Valley Island conference centre, Lisburn. Overall, 78 parks and green spaces have been acknowledged.
Commenting on the University’s Award, Professor Michael Alcorn, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability and Strategic Projects) at Queen's, said:
“Congratulations to all our staff across the University on this latest recognition. This Award acknowledges the high-quality management of our green spaces, which can only be achieved through the contributions of many colleagues and community partners working together, on and off site. I thank them for their continued hard work. Our care for our green spaces, and the conservation of the heritage of our site, ensure these spaces remain a real asset to our staff, students, visitors, and wider community.”
Sara Lynch, Head of Sustainability at Queen's, commented:
“We are delighted that the work we do at Queen's in sustaining our green spaces and built heritage has once again come through the Green Flag Awards’ rigorous judging process. This is our sixth successive Awards recognition, and it is continually encouraging to know that our green spaces remain some of the best in the country. We are proud of the work we do here to support our environment for the benefit of so many and as part of our net zero journey.”
