Queen’s celebrates European Week for Waste Reduction with a vibrant line-up of sustainability events
Queen’s will participate in European Week for Waste Reduction 2024 with an engaging line-up of sustainability events taking place across the university campus from 18 to 23 November.
Throughout the week, staff, students, and the wider community will have meaningful opportunities for hands-on involvement in sustainability and community-building events and activities, reinforcing Queen’s commitment to sustainability and its goal of achieving net zero by 2040.
Michael Alcorn, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Projects), said:
“At Queen’s, we believe that sustainability is a collective effort. By bringing together our staff, students, and the wider community, we are not just talking about sustainability; we're actively engaging our entire community in creating positive change and taking meaningful action".
Some of the events happening throughout the week include:
- a free pop-up bike check at Freedom Cycles;
- a repair cafe;
- a student swap shop;
- a community-wide litter pick;
- a cookery class;
- a zero-waste vegan breakfast.
Kieran Minto, Students' Union President, highlighted the vital role of student involvement:
“European Week for Waste Reduction provides an excellent opportunity for students across the campus community to make a meaningful impact. By embracing sustainable fashion through exchanging clothes at our new Student Swap Shop or joining the Big Autumn Litter Pick, students can develop practical skills while promoting a more sustainable campus and city, inspiring others to drive positive change."
Sara Lynch, Head of Sustainability at Queen’s, added:
“Queen’s is proud to participate in European Week for Waste Reduction, showcasing our shared commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. This initiative offers a wonderful platform for our staff and students to come together, share ideas, and take meaningful actions that benefit our campus and the wider community".
All events are free and open to staff and students across the campus.
