Queen's Postdocs celebrated in annual showcase event
The annual Postdoc Showcase at Queen's University took place on Friday 29 September. The theme of this year's event was 'Creating Impact Through Collaboration'.
The event – held in celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week 2023 (19 to 23 September) – was organised by the Postdoc Society (PDS) with support from the Postdoctoral Development Centre (PDC).
Taking place in the Whitla Hall, the day was an opportunity for all Postdocs and research staff at Queen's to showcase their research, learn about research activity underway in other areas of the University, and take part in face-to-face networking.
Guest speaker Professor Stuart Elborn, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor opened proceedings with his reflections on collaboration and its role in increasing research impact. Professor Michael Alcorn, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Strategic Projects and Sustainability, delivered a fascinating keynote on ‘Making Your Mark – Navigating Research Landscapes Then and Now’. Dr Alex Lucas and Dr Omololu Fagunwa facilitated a panel discussion on ‘Creating Impact Through Collaboration’ featuring academic members of staff from Queen’s including Professor David Grieve, Dr Maeliosa McCrudden, and Dr Neil Galway, as well as external speakers Professor Danielle McCarthy, Chief Health Officer at Spoon Guru and Co-Founder of Nutrition Talent, and Dr Karen Beattie, Head of the Office for Research Ethics Northern Ireland.
Attendees also enjoyed a research poster exhibition, and five-minute flash-talks by selected postdocs and research staff, with prizes for the best flash-talks and posters. The research talks and posters aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and were pitched to a wide audience, in order to enable researchers across the different disciplines to understand and enjoy them.
The PDC Postdoc Awards were also presented at this event, and all winners and nominees can be viewed below:
