Announced at a Gala Awards Dinner at the University of York on 31 July 2019, the Rising Star award recognises Gary as an individual who is seen as an emerging talent with the potential to become a future leader in his industry.

Organised by the leading professional membership body for in-house caterers operating in the higher, further education and public sector, the annual TUCO Awards recognise and celebrate effort, improvement and achievement from all levels of staff within the higher education catering industry.

Gary said, "It is fantastic to be recognised with a Rising Star award from TUCO – one of the most inspiring organisations in the catering industry. The win was both exciting and unexpected and I am immensely proud to have represented the University at the Gala Awards ceremony."

"I would like to say a big thank you everyone who nominated me and to the whole Campus Food and Drink team who have helped, guided and supported me since I joined the team."

Based mainly in the Great Hall, Gary, who is Customer Host in the Campus Food and Drink team in Queen's Student Plus Directorate, works across a number of sites in both an operational and administrative capacity. He advises on hospitality requirements for events in the Great Hall and Riddel Hall.

Having joined the University in 2009 while still a student, Gary progressed through the ranks after graduating and played a pivotal role in the opening of Riddel Hall following its renovation.
