Second award in six months for Queen's composer
Professor Piers Hellawell, from the School or Arts, English and Languages, is one of eleven UK composers to win the 2018 Composers' Fund awards made by the PRS Foundation for Music in London.
This award supports the project that also won Professor Hellawell the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's Individual Award last November – a recording project of various musical outputs since 2010.
The Composers' Fund awards offer support to any creative projects by established composers, and so attract a huge range of applications.
On receiving the award, Professor Hellawell said:
"I salute the PRSF Composers' Fund as one of very few artistic resources that both recognize the continuing needs of established practitioners and lend resources with breadth and freedom – allowing experienced artists to follow the projects they believe in, rather than struggling to conform to existing frameworks. This is a lifeline. Long may it continue!"
