The Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, a cutting-edge research facility located in the University’s Health Sciences Campus, was named Project of the Year at the annual RICS Awards, which celebrate projects from across the region. The building also scooped the RICS Design through Innovation award.

Designed by Architects Ostick & Williams and Stantec, the 9000m2 research facility represents an investment of £32m and is the latest phase in the configuration of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences. The building has been designed to enhance its internationally recognised excellence in education and research, and incorporates a range of measures which will lower carbon emissions and deliver a more sustainable building.

The Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine provides accommodation for some 330 members of staff specialising in research into finding cures for eye diseases, diabetes, and respiratory disorders, and the development of a global programme to aid understanding of the genetics of complex chronic diseases.

The Graduate School – another major project by Queen’s Estates Directorate – was also recognised at the RICS Awards, receiving a ‘Highly Commended’ in the Building Conservation category.
