Speakers at painting (l-r): Professor Ian Greer; Professor Mary McAleese; Lord Lieutenant of Belfast, Dame Fionnuala Jay-O'Boyle; and artist Michelle Rogers.

The painting unveiled during the event, by artist Michelle Rogers, was inspired by the moment her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and the former President of Ireland, Professor Mary McAleese paid their respects at the Garden of Remembrance as part of Her Majesty’s state visit to Ireland in 2011.

Following the unveiling, the Lord-Lieutenant for the County Borough of Belfast and President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Greer presented Platinum Jubilee Scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University.

Established in 2022 in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II, the Platinum Jubilee Scholarships were funded through the Queen's Foundation Annual Fund, which was established in 1999 to enhance the student experience at Queen's. Each year the fund, which is made possible through philanthropic gifts from graduates and friends of the University, supports a diverse range of projects and events, including scholarships, mental health and wellbeing initiatives, sports development, community impact, and cultural diversity initiatives.
