The School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics (HAPP) and the School of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) have both been awarded a Bronze award. These awards are the first for both in their new merged structures as HAPP and NBE. Both awards are valid until 2026.

Professor Karen McCloskey, Director of Queen's Gender Initiative and Academic Lead for Athena SWAN, said:

"Congratulations to both Schools. Their achievements are the result of sustained hard work and commitment to gender equality. In particular, I would like to thank the SWAN Champions and their colleagues whose commitment and dedication to the principles of Athena SWAN have been recognized through these very well-deserved awards."

The Athena SWAN Charter is a rigorous peer-reviewed external framework that recognises commitment shown by Universities and their individual Schools and Departments to advancing gender equality.

For departmental or university-wide success, applicants for the charter mark must undertake a detailed analysis in their areas, enabling them to plan measurable actions that enable real impact in advancing gender equality.

Professor Alister Miskimmon, Head of the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics, said:

"Athena SWAN recognition in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics is vitally important to us and we will ensure that we take forward our ambitious Action Plan over the next 5-year period. The award is recognition of the tremendous work our Athena SWAN team do in the School."

Professor Greg Keeffe, Head of the School of Natural and Built Environment, said:

"We have been working towards an Athena SWAN award since the School of Natural and Built Environment was founded in 2016. We see the award as an integral part of the ethos of how we practice as a community, in what is a very diverse School. The award reflects not only how far we have come, but also the ambitious projects we have planned for the future. We are excited to be on the journey that Athena SWAN has helped us charter."

Queen's University currently holds an institutional silver award and 14 School awards (three gold, six silver and five bronze).
