eVisa Frequently Asked Questions
-
My BRP card is due to expire on 31st December 2024. What do I need to do at this moment?
Please create your UKVI account to access your eVisa as soon as possible.
- I don't have a BRP card because I have an EU passport. Should I also do something about my eVisa?
If you are an EU national you should already have a UKVI account and be able to log in to view this.
- Some passports are not readable using the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app. What do I do?
If you don’t hold an appropriate biometric passport to set up your UKVI account using the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’, you should be able to use your BRP card to set up your UKVI account. Once the account is set up, you can then link your passport. To link your passport, you will just need to upload a photo or scan.
- I'm having trouble scanning my document in the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app. What do I do?
Please ensure the phone you’re using meets the following specifications:
Android users will need:
-
Android 8.0 and above – you can find this in your settings
-
at least 135MB of storage space to install the app
-
to be connected to 3G, 4G, 5G or WiFi
-
NFC (Near-Field Communication) so the app can scan your document – you can find this in your settings. If you can use your phone to pay for things using contactless, this means it has NFC and you can use the app
iPhone users will need:
-
an iPhone 7, 7 Plus or newer
-
iOS 15 or later - to find the software version installed, go to Settings > General, then About
-
at least 120MB of storage space to install the app
-
to be connected to 3G, 4G, 5G or WiFi
Whichever phone you use, the app will need access to the camera. If the app does not request access, enable it in your settings.
If you are struggling to get access to a suitable phone, please contact the Immigration Support Service team for assistance.

- I have created my UKVI account but can't see my eVisa. What should I do?
If you have completed all the steps to create your UKVI account and you still cannot see your eVisa details, the Home Office should contact you directly by email once your eVisa is available to view. However, please contact the Home Office Resolution Centre in the first instance. If they are unable to resolve the issue, then please raise it with the Immigration Support Service team.
-
I have created my eVisa using my BRP. How do I link my passport to my eVisa?
You can link your current passport using the update your UKVI account details online service.
- I've already created my UKVI account and linked to my eVisa. Is there anything else that I should be aware of?
If you created your UKVI account using your BRP card, please ensure that you link your current passport to your account before any international travel using the update your UKVI account details online service. As your personal details, contact details or passport information changes, please ensure that you keep this updated in your UKVI account.
- If I'm using my passport details to log in to the UKVI account, does that automatically mean that the passport is linked to the eVisa already or do I need to take extra steps?
If you can login with your passport details, your passport should be linked. You should be able to see the documents linked to your account at the bottom of the update your UKVI account details online service.
- Which app do I use to show my eVisa status?
The ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app is only used to create your UKVI account and can be deleted from your phone once your account has been set up.
If you need to demonstrate your permissions while you are in the UK you should use the View and prove service to generate a share code. If travelling internationally, you will be demonstrating your permissions by presenting your current passport that should be linked to your UKVI account.
- I have just switched my visa route. My eVisa was linked with my previous immigration status. Now that I have my new BRP, my eVisa still shows my previous permissions. Do I have to manually add a new BRP as an identity document on my eVisa portal?
If your current passport is linked to your account, this should be updated automatically. If it still doesn’t update after linking your current passport, please report an error with your eVisa in the first instance.
-
Do I need to create separate UKVI accounts for my partner and/or child?
Yes, everyone needs their own UKVI account. A parent can create a UKVI account on behalf of a child. To create a UKVI account for a child, the parent, guardian or responsible adult will need the child’s identity document and date of birth. The adult can use their own contact details, such as their phone number and email address.
- Once I link my passport as the identity document, would I still need to carry my BRP?
Yes, you should continue to carry your BRP with you when you travel internationally until 31 March 2025. UK Visas and Immigration have advised:
Before you travel, you should check your eVisa has all the correct details. If there’s an issue with your eVisa, there are steps you can take to try to resolve it.Sign in to your UKVI account to check that your eVisa is linked to your current passport or travel document.
You’ll still need to carry your current passport or travel document with you.
You should also get a share code to prove your immigration status before you travel. Your carrier may ask to see it. A share code is valid for 90 days.
If your biometric residence card (BRC) issued through the EU Settlement Scheme or biometric residence permit (BRP) expires on or after 31 December 2024, you you may be able to use your expired document to travel to the UK until 31 March 2025, where you continue to have permission to stay in the UK.
You should carry it with you - your carrier may ask to see it.
You should also:
- set up access to your online immigration status (eVisa) (online proof of your immigration status) if you have not done it already
- get a share code to prove your immigration status - a share code is valid for 90 days
- When I arrive at a UK airport, what do I show the immigration officer?
Throughout 2024, you can continue to use your physical immigration documents as normal and should continue to carry these with you when you travel internationally.
From 01 January 2025 you should ensure you have set up access to your online immigration status (eVisa) (online proof of your immigration status) and it is recommended you carry the following physical documents:
Your current passport
Your BRP card that expired on the 31 December 2024
You get a share code to prove your immigration status - a share code is valid for 90 days

- My partner and I will return home during the Christmas break and will return via Dublin airport in January. What documents should we show the immigration officers at Dublin airport since we usually provide our passports and physical BRP?
You will need to make sure that you have both created your UKVI accounts and that your current passports are linked. If you have any issues with this, please contact the Immigration Support Service team.

Is air travel in the UK ok?
It is important to carry a form of photographic ID for domestic travel. However, as you are not entering the country and not required to evidence your immigration permissions at the border, your current passport or driving license should be sufficient. Please verify the requirements with your carrier.
- If I haven't been able to set up my eVisa, can I travel via Dublin Airport instead?
The Common Travel Area involves some co-operation on immigration issues. If you are planning to enter the UK through the Republic of Ireland (ROI), e.g. via Dublin Airport, it is important to note that you may be refused permission to enter ROI if you are unable to evidence that you qualify for admission to the UK. In other words, when entering the UK via Dublin Airport (for example), and you have permission to stay in the UK for longer than 6 months, you must be able to evidence your immigration status by presenting your eVisa.
- I have created two UKVI accounts. What do I do now?
Please contact the Home Office Resolution Centre in the first instance. If they are unable to resolve the issue, then please raise it with the Immigration Support Service team.
- What if I have lost or misplaced my BRP?
You can use your travel document, such as a passport, or your visa application reference number to create your UKVI account if your BRP card has been lost or stolen.
If you no longer have access to your Home Office reference numbers (e.g. BRP number, or visa application number such as UAN or GWF) you can request these via the Request Your Reference service to enable you to register for your UKVI account. You will be directed to this service at the relevant point when creating your UKVI account.
-
I don't have either a BRP or BRC as I have indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Do I need to act on this?
Yes, if you hold a legacy document to evidence your ILR, such as an ink stamp or vignette sticker, please submit a No Time Limit application as soon as possible.
- I have acquired British or Irish citizenship. Do I need to create a UKVI account?
No, if you are a British or Irish citizen you do not need an eVisa or a UKVI account. You should continue to use your British or Irish passport to prove your status in the UK.
- Do I have to do anything if I hold settled or pre-settled status as the family member of an EU national?
If you have been granted status under the EU Settlement Scheme then you should already have a UKVI account and be able to log in to view your eVisa.
- I have a pending No Time Limit (NTL) application. Can I enter the UK from 1 January 2025 if my UKVI account hasn't been set up?
While the Home Office has stated that legacy documents will be accepted after 31 December 2024, the Immigration Support Service team would advise students to avoid all but absolutely essential travel in January as we don’t know how well this message has been cascaded among carriers as the border moves to become “digital by default”.
Simultaneously to the eVisa rollout, the UK government are also phasing in the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for eligible nationals. If you have been using the eGates to enter the UK, you will no longer be able to do so from January without the eVisa in place. Even if you are an eligible national for an ETA, you could not obtain an ETA as a temporary measure as you already hold permission to live in the UK and are therefore ineligible to obtain an ETA.
- I have lost my passport containing an ILR ink stamp or vignette sticker. What do I do?
You should still make an No Time Limit (NTL) application. If the document you have lost is a current passport from your home country, then you will also need to obtain a replacement from your home country’s government before travelling internationally.
-
The NTL application seems to be for those with ILR as a paper immigration document. For those who already have a BRP, is the eVisa enough?
Yes, if you have a BRP card, please disregard the information regarding NTL - this is only applicable to those who hold ILR as a legacy ink stamp or vignette sticker.
- My BRP is expiring as is everyone else's. How do I reapply for my ILR as my 10-year time period is coming to an end?
If you hold ILR as a BRP, and have not had a significant absence from the UK, you should not need to do anything other than create your UKVI account to access your eVisa.
