Lost or Stolen Passport or BRP

Lost or Stolen Passport or BRP
What do I do if my passport or BRP has been lost of stolen?

If you lose your passport and/or BRP card while you are travelling outside the UK or inside the UK the following information should help you identify the next steps you need to take.

Lost/Stolen Inside the UK
  • Passport
    1. You must report your lost/stolen passport to the Police as soon as possible to obtain a crime reference number.
    2. You should then contact the Embassy or High Commission of your home country for information on how to apply for a replacement passport. This process will be different for every country and you may need to wait some time before you have your new passport.
    3. You must update your new passport details with UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) by updating your UKVI account which you created when applying for your visa or setting up your eVisa.  You can find further information about updating your details on UKVI's website.
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

    1. You must report to UKVI that you have lost your BRP. You can do this by following the instructions on UKVI's website.

    2. You should inform the QUB Student Immigration Support Service that you have lost your BRP.

    3. UKVI are no longer issuing replacement BRP cards.  Instead you will need to set up your eVisa if you have not done so already.  An eVisa is a digital record of your immigration permission. You can find further information about setting up your eVisa on our dedicated eVisa webpage

Lost/Stolen Outside the UK
  • Passport
    1. If you lose your passport outside the UK you must report this to the local Police station in the country you are in to obtain a crime reference number.
    2. You should then contact the local Embassy or High Commission of your home country in the country you are currently located for information on applying for a new passport
    3. Even if your passport did not contain your current immigration permission, you must update your details with UKVI as soon as you get back to the UK via a Change of Circumstances (MCC) form.

If you lose your passport you must inform the QUB Student Immigration Support Service at immigration@qub.ac.uk.

  • BRP card (i.e. visa on a credit card sized biometric card)

    1.  You must report to UKVI that you have lost your BRP. You can do this by following the instructions on UKVI's website.

    2. UKVI are no longer issuing replacement BRP Cards.  Instead, you will need to prove your immigration status by accessing your eVisa.  An eVisa is a digital record of your immigration permission.  You can find further information about accessing your eVisa on our dedicated eVisa webpage.

    3. Only if you are unable to set up an account to access your eVisa, you will need to apply online for a single entry visa to return to the UK.

    • Under "Confirm your visa type" For "category of application", select "A replacement biometric residence permit (BRP) visa"
    • You will need to provide a letter from the University confirming you are a student and a police report with your application.

The fee for this application is £154.

Once you return to the UK, please contact immigration@qub.ac.uk and we can assist you with accessing your eVisa.

Informing your School and the Immigration Support Service

If you have lost your passport and/or visa, you must inform your University School and the QUB Student Immigration Support Service team by email.

This is to enable us to assist you with the situation and to make arrangements with your School if you have to miss part of your course while obtaining a replacement visa.
