Research interests include intelligent systems with a particular focus on data based modelling, analysis of dynamical systems, encompassing techniques ranging from classical system identification, fault diagnosis and statistical process control, modern artificial intelligence and biologically inspired adaptive learning algorithms and optimisation techniques. Collaborations with industry have included projects that involve process monitoring, control and optimisation, time series prediction, in-line sensor characterisation, advanced manufacturing informatics, energy and sustainability.

Expertise in the development of unmanned vehicles specifically in the maritime domain, including  the development of formation control systems for land, aerial and marine vehicles, and co-operative control of a dual arm system such as a humanoid. Involved in the development of navigation systems for uninhabited vehicles which includes obstacles detection and avoidance and simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) systems.
